All-Electric Comfort, Sized and Installed Right
Heat pumps do both jobs in one efficient system: they cool your home in summer and heat it in winter, all on electricity. As California moves toward electrification, and as furnace rules tighten, they’ve become the smart choice for a growing number of South Bay homeowners. Modern Air has installed and serviced heat pumps and ductless mini-splits across the region since 2009, and refrigeration is in our roots, so precise, properly charged systems are what we do.
We also stay connected to what we install. When a heat pump an hour and a half away in Scotts Valley kept shutting off, Andrew remoted into the communicating system and spotted a bad temperature sensor. He ordered the part before sending anyone out, and the repair took exactly one visit.
Worried About the Cost? Here Is the Honest Path
Price is the first thing most people ask about, and a heat pump is a real investment. The good news is that the sticker price is rarely what you actually pay, and you don’t have to figure that out alone.
- Rebates, handled for you. Silicon Valley Clean Energy pays up to $2,000 toward a heat pump that replaces a gas furnace, and $3,000 for income-qualified homes in its service area. We track what’s open, install qualifying equipment, and file the paperwork. See the South Bay rebate guide.
- Financing that fits a budget. Wisetack lets you check monthly options with a soft credit check that doesn’t affect your score, so a new system can cost less per month than the repair treadmill on an old one. Details on our financing page.
- A free, no-pressure estimate. Replacement quotes are free, and the price comes from the installer who will actually do the work, not a salesperson.
Getting other bids? Good, you should. Here is how to compare heat pump quotes so you can tell a real number from a cheap one that leaves out the work your home needs.
What We Install and Service
- Central heat pumps, Whole-home heating and cooling, matched to your home based on the property, existing system, comfort needs, and our installation experience. Additional sizing calculations are performed when needed.
- Ductless mini-splits, Mitsubishi systems for additions, older homes, garages, ADUs, and rooms your ducts can’t reach. No ductwork required.
- Heat pump repair & maintenance, Diagnostics, refrigerant service, and tune-ups. Remote monitoring comes standard on the communicating systems we install, so we can often spot a problem before you’re left without comfort.
Rebates and Incentives, Explained Honestly
The hardest part of going electric is figuring out the money, and the programs change constantly. State and regional rebate programs open and close as their funding runs out, so we track them as they come and go. Right now, Silicon Valley Clean Energy offers heat-pump incentives that many of our customers use, and we walk you through what you genuinely qualify for. You won’t get inflated rebate promises from us; you’ll get the real numbers so you can plan with confidence.
Why the Installer Matters More Than the Brand
Two companies can quote the same heat pump at very different levels of quality. The difference is who installs it and whether they stand behind it. A heat pump only delivers its rated efficiency when it’s correctly sized, charged, and commissioned, and that’s exactly the work Modern Air obsesses over. Your quote comes from a working installer who knows exactly how the job will go in, not a commissioned salesperson, and our own crew handles the install.

How much can I save with heat pump rebates in California?
It varies by program and your utility. Silicon Valley Clean Energy currently offers heat-pump incentives for many South Bay homes, and other state and utility programs open and close throughout the year. Modern Air keeps current and walks you through what you actually qualify for before you commit, no inflated promises.
Does a heat pump work in cold weather?
Yes. Heat pump technology has improved dramatically and handles South Bay and Santa Cruz mountain winters comfortably. Modern cold-climate models keep heating efficiently well below the temperatures we see here.
What’s the difference between a ductless mini-split and central AC?
A ductless mini-split mounts indoor heads in specific rooms and needs no ductwork, ideal for additions, older homes, garages, and homes with undersized or no ducts. Central systems condition the whole house through ducts. We’ll recommend the right fit for your home and budget.
Which heat pump brands do you install?
Modern Air is a Trane dealer and installs Trane heat pumps and Mitsubishi ductless systems, among other major brands we can source. We only install equipment we can register and warranty, not units bought online, which manufacturers won’t cover.
Do I have to replace my gas furnace with a heat pump?
Not necessarily, but California’s electrification push and changing furnace rules make heat pumps increasingly attractive, and rebate-eligible. When your furnace is near end of life, switching is often the smarter long-term move. We’ll show you the numbers honestly.
